Of the many special events that are taking place in Asakusa, one is going on these days on the grounds of Senso-ji: the year-end market Toshi no Ichi (歳の市), where traditionally New Year’s decorations were sold. It coincides and with the Hagoita Ichi (羽子板市), where decorated wooden rackets (battledores) are on sale.I was a little surprised that this market does not draw the crowds one is used to from other events in Asakusa (especially the Tori no Ichi and the Sanja Matsuri come to mind), at least not when we were passing yesterday. Nonetheless, the market with its stands full of colorful hagoita and other traditional Japanese handicrafts is an attractive sight. Watch out for the little clapping ritual performed by the stand owners whenever one of the big and expensive hagoita is sold! Of course also food stands are not missing. The market is open until ten pm and the lit up grounds of Senso-ji, already decorated for New Year, are a sight to behold.
