Visiting Singapore: Little India
March 1, 2011 by sevenbrane
Singapore is very multicultural, its inhabitants being of Chinese, Malay and Indian extraction. Accordingly, Singapore has many faces. We are staying in Little India. As the name suggests, the inhabitants of this quarter are mainly Indian. The prevailing clothing style is traditional Indian, the streets are lined by Indian (often vegetarian!) restaurants, sari shops and goldsmiths specializing in Indian wedding jewelry. The smell of spices fills the air. Of course the area also houses a number of Indian temples, the roofs of which are populated by crowds of colorful figures. Your shoes remain at the entrance of the temple compound. The religious practices inside are strange and intriguing to me. What is also remarkable is that the temple grounds seem to be also a place to simply sit and relax. Entire families can be seen sitting on the ground in the shade of the temple buildings.
But not enough with that. Also mosques, Buddhist and Taoist temples can be found in the neighborhood. Little India is extremely colorful and varied and can truly make your head spin. A day walking around Little India is a like a tour of Asia.
Looks like such a lively place – love all the colors and cultural scenes. I really want to visit Singapore one day!
I’ve been there and got the train chewing gum. It was impressive someone said Singapore is the Disneyland with death penalty.
Das Tan House ist mein Favorit
