The Rainstorm

On our last day in Kyoto, a Saturday, we decided to visit a large temple complex in the North of town, Daitokuji (大徳寺). We had read that there was a fantastic Zen garden at one of the sub-temples.
090801095627 It was a hot and humid day under dense cloud cover. The area was large and comparatively quiet. We started walking among the many sub-temples. Most were closed to the public, and we were only allowed to catch a glimpse of a beautiful garden or pathway here or there through a gate or doorway.
Finally, we found a temple we could visit: Koto-in (高桐院), a Zen temple, founded in 1601 by a military leader who later in life devoted himself to the study of Zen. (more…)
