Peas, salad with soramame and pecorino, soramame

The spring vegetables are all eaten up now: peas, soramame, salad. I consider all of them a success. The radishes remained below expectations in size (they count as the easiest thing ever to grow, but somehow they’re not working out for me), but at least they taste good. The mint has been growing so vigorously that as a means of control we had to resort to preparing an Indian-style mint dip. (more…)

We’ve had the aphid invasion and the grub evasion, now we have the slug invasion. How they got here, I don’t know. But they sure multiplied. I guess I don’t really have an ecological balance here on the terrace. The natural predators of slugs, such as toads and ducks, are somehow missing. (Someone please spread word to the ducks in Ueno Park to stop by here for a snack!) (more…)

Terrace Update IX

The climate in late autumn is fantastic here. In the afternoons, we still have around 20 degrees Celsius. While in other countries, trees are already defoliated, most trees are still green here. It seems that the geraniums went out of service for this year, and also the morning glories are closing down. But the Zinnias, Cosmos and Snapdragons are still going strong, providing cheerful colors. They have been blooming since May! (more…)
