The Sanja Matsuri came round again, and again, we dove into the crowds on Saturday and watched the mikoshi pass by our house on Sunday. The special highlight for me on Sunday was again the performances of the local Taiko drummers!
As usual, I was attracted by the elegant, choreographed movements of the drummers. In the narrow streets, the sound of the drums was quite overwhelming, really a physical experience. While the big drum resonates in my chest, the smaller ones resonate in my belly.
To give you a flavor, I used again the video feature of my camera. The quality is so-so, there were many people standing in front of me and my arms grew really shaky trying to hold the camera up high…
This first one is an entire piece. If it seems boring at first, hold on, it gets more interesting. If the sound doesn’t seem to match the movement, this is because only one of the two solo drummers shows on the video.
This is the other solo drummer of the group. Only an excerpt of a piece.
Another short clip. The guy with the two drums is amazingly fast an very dramatic!

Das war ja ein aufregendes fest, das kann man noch aus den videos heraus spüren. da wart ihr sicher den ganzen tag unterwegs. Alles toll und exakt eingeübt, schade, dass ich nciht dort war.
